Weekly Challenge #282: "Spill It!"

This weeks Diva Challenge was an opportunity for me to try something new. As I browse tangled tiles and read other people's posts I often see examples of what people do when they spill liquid on their tiles; be it wine, tea, paint, etc.

This week the Diva challenged us to 'spill it' (the tile) with some form of liquid, so I chose tea. I am a lover of tea so I thought it was appropriate to use tea. So after making myself a cuppa I 'accidentally' spilled some tea onto my tile and waited for it to dry.

I then sat down with a fresh cuppa and began tangling. Although I have only used the aura technique and no tangles per say, I am very happy with the simplistic outcome of  my tile. It just didn't need anything else.

Try spilling something on a tile & using the spill as your string. It is a really interesting idea.

If you so desire, head on over to The Diva's blog and check out what others are creating for this challenge.

3D Starfish Card

I held a wonderful Zentangle class last weekend with some very enthusiastic tanglers. They wanted to create some Zentangle Inspired Art (ZIA) so I came up with a 3D card based on a Zendala I had tangled previously.

This is my original Zendala.

From the original I created a template for the different layers to create the 3D effect. I also created a card template with a circular cut out section on the front for the 3D Zendala to peek through which would be glued on the inside of the card.

The participants used copies of the template to tangle on and cut out. Then using double sided tape on the back of each starfish shape they layered the pieces on top of one another. Some extra tangling around the 3D Zendala was then added to the front & inside of the card to create some extra interest and surprise. We all had a wonderful time tangling, cutting & putting together the cards and everyone went home extremely happy with their tangled cards.

School Holiday workshops

Over the last school holidays I ran a number of Zentangle workshops for children at various libraries.

The participants during the workshops varied from 4 years old to 16 years old.

The children were very excited at what they were able to achieve and the highlight of each workshop was the mosaic displaying everyone's tile together. There were many ooh's and ahh's and everyone went away wanting more.

And here are a couple of the hand ZIAs the participants worked on.

Surprising Results

Zentangle always keeps on surprising

I wanted to share an idea I was inspired to try after reading one of CZT, Sue Jacobs blog posts a while back. Sue used a paper chain doll template in the round as a string for a zendala.

After some research and some playing around I completed my first zendala using a paper chain doll template. In the completed Zendala it is very hard to see the original paper chain dolls.

Here is my first Zendala.

Tangles: zonked, finery & printemps

I loved the result and decided to run a class using this idea.

Unfortunately there was only one participant in this workshop but we were both surprised at the different looks we had achieved.
The zendala drawn by the participant ended up with the same basic outline as my original. However, using the same paper chain doll template and tangles I was surprised at how different my Zendala turned out. Thinking back, I must have placed the template in a different position to where I had placed it originally. The tangles were placed in exactly the same spaces on the Zendala, yet it is surprising how different they both look.
This is the one I completed during the workshop.

Here is a photo of the two workshop Zendalas before they were finished.

Unexpected & surprising results are just one of the amazing things about Zentangle. You never know what is going to happen. I love it!

Muster Mixer #21 - Ennies & D-Vine

Ennies and D-vine are the two tangles used in this months tangle mixer challenge by CZT, Anya Lathrop. Playing and mixing these two tangles was very relaxing as they easily flowed together.

After I had finished tangling this tile it really looked flat. The shading is definitely the icing on the cake with this tile and totally added more life and interest.

If you are looking to add to your Zentangle creativity then having a go at Anya's mixer challenges once a month are a great idea. And best of all, if you want you can share your ideas with other people who love the challenge by using the linky machine, or not, or just enjoy watching your Zentangle tiles take on a whole new creative life.
