12 Days of 3Zs - 1st Day
Hi Everyone,
At the ZenAgain seminar this year Rick & Maria introduced wonderful triangular tiles to add to your creative collection.
As in previous years Zentangle HQ is running their 12 Days of Zentangle series in celebration of the festive Christmas season. Each day over the next 12 days they will be celebrating a new verse in the song with lovely 3Z tiles. To learn more about this wonderful celebration head on over to the Zentangle Blog here for details.
I hopefully aim to complete each of the 12 days along with Zentangle HQ and will post them here on my blog.
So, one the first day of Christmas - here is my 3Z tile using the tangle tripoli.

Weekly Challenge #295: "Reticula/Fragment part 2"
This week I chose to use two fragments from the Zentangle Primer Vol. 1 for this weeks challenge by Laura Harms, CZT. The two fragments used were F5 & S4. The reticula I used was a squareish grid. Looking at this tile it is quite hard to see the grid I started with because of the interaction between the two fragments and the shading.
I am now seeing other possibilities for shading that would give this tile a whole new look. If time permits I will create another tile with my different shading possibilities and add to this post.
In the meantime, head on over to The Diva's blog and check out what others are creating for this challenge if you so desire.

Weekly Challenge #290 "Duotangle: 'NZeppel vs Flux"
Duotangles are one of my favourite Zentangles to complete. This week The Diva, CZT Laura Harms asked us to use the tangles Flux & N'Zeppel to create a duotangle. A duotangle is a tile using two tangles only.
Here is my first Zentangle inspired art tile. With this tile I began with N'zeppel covering my tile. Then I added little black Flux on the top to create little flower like shapes. Once I had completed the shading I added silver gel pen around the Flux to make the petals stand out more, as they had kind of become lost in the shading.
I don't often have time to complete two tiles for the challenges but since I love duotangles so much I decided to draw one on a black tile. Again I started with N'Zeppel covering my tile then added little Flux shapes inside each of the N'Zeppel round shapes.
Although both tiles started out the same, they look completely different.
Check out what others are creating for this challenge if you so desire by heading on over to The Diva's blog and clicking on the links at the bottom of the page.

Muster Mixer #23 - D-Vine & Embellish
Hi All,
Another month has flown by so quickly and there is so much to do, so this will be a quick post.
This months pattern mixer by Anya Lathrope is to mix/merge the two tangles D-Vine and Embellish.
Here is my tile mixing these two tangles together.
If you are looking to add to your Zentangle creativity then having a go
at Anya's mixer challenges once a month are a great idea. And best of
all, if you want you can share your ideas with other people who love the
challenge by using the 'linky machine', or not, or just enjoy watching
your Zentangle tiles take on a whole new creative life.

Weekly Challenge #284: "Monotangle to Tripoli"
Well! This weeks challenge from "The Diva" was to create a monotangle using
the tangle tripoli. I thought many people would draw tripoli and fill
sections with different fragments. It has taken me some time to come up with something a little different and it was an interesting experiment for this challenge.
I began by filling my tile with tripoli. Turning my tile, I drew tripoli again over the top of what I had already drawn. So I had tripoli over the top of tripoli but this time I did not fill the tile.
By the time I had finished it looked pretty messy and I wasn't quite sure what I would do. Throw it away or work with it. So before throwing it away, which I hate doing, I did a great deal of thinking and decided to go with filling the top tripoli that sat inside the triangles of the bottom triploi in black. This still left the messy bits. Oh! What to do? More thinking and time passing I came up with the idea of filling the spaces of the top tripoli with glitter gel pen.
As I was experimenting I didn't think of taking photos of the different steps. I am sorry for this oversight as my written explanation may not make much sense to you.
Here are the final versions of the two tiles I did.

I actually don't mind the finished tiles and would like to experiment some more at a later date.
I must say I feel they will look totally different to what I was thinking other people would do with this challenge. Once I finish posting this I will head on over to the Diva's blog & check them out.

Muster Mixer #22 - Netting & Antique
Here are another two tangles that Anya challenged us to use in her 22nd challenge this month. Anya's challenge is to mix/blend/merge two tangles together to create a whole new look. Netting and antique are the two tangles this month.
Since I don't often tangle on a tan tile I decided this would be a good opportunity. I feel this tile still needs something to finish it off but thought I would post as is as I await the inspiration I am looking for.

Weekly Challenge #282: "Spill It!"
This weeks Diva Challenge was an opportunity for me to try something new. As I browse tangled tiles and read other people's posts I often see examples of what people do when they spill liquid on their tiles; be it wine, tea, paint, etc.
This week the Diva challenged us to 'spill it' (the tile) with some form of liquid, so I chose tea. I am a lover of tea so I thought it was appropriate to use tea. So after making myself a cuppa I 'accidentally' spilled some tea onto my tile and waited for it to dry.
I then sat down with a fresh cuppa and began tangling. Although I have only used the aura technique and no tangles per say, I am very happy with the simplistic outcome of my tile. It just didn't need anything else.
Try spilling something on a tile & using the spill as your string. It is a really interesting idea.
If you so desire, head on over to The Diva's blog and check out what others are creating for this challenge.

3D Starfish Card
I held a wonderful Zentangle class last weekend with some very enthusiastic tanglers. They wanted to create some Zentangle Inspired Art (ZIA) so I came up with a 3D card based on a Zendala I had tangled previously.
This is my original Zendala.
This is my original Zendala.
From the original I created a template for the different layers to create the 3D effect. I also created a card template with a circular cut out section on the front for the 3D Zendala to peek through which would be glued on the inside of the card.
The participants used copies of the template to tangle on and cut out. Then using double sided tape on the back of each starfish shape they layered the pieces on top of one another. Some extra tangling around the 3D Zendala was then added to the front & inside of the card to create some extra interest and surprise. We all had a wonderful time tangling, cutting & putting together the cards and everyone went home extremely happy with their tangled cards.

School Holiday workshops
Over the last school holidays I ran a number of Zentangle workshops for children at various libraries.
The participants during the workshops varied from 4 years old to 16 years old.
The children were very excited at what they were able to achieve and the highlight of each workshop was the mosaic displaying everyone's tile together. There were many ooh's and ahh's and everyone went away wanting more.

And here are a couple of the hand ZIAs the participants worked on.

Surprising Results
Zentangle always keeps on surprising
I wanted to share an idea I was inspired to try after reading one of CZT, Sue Jacobs blog posts a while back. Sue used a paper chain doll template in the round as a string for a zendala.
After some research and some playing around I completed my first zendala using a paper chain doll template. In the completed Zendala it is very hard to see the original paper chain dolls.
Here is my first Zendala.
I loved the result and decided to run a class using this idea.
Unfortunately there was only one participant in this workshop but we were both surprised at the different looks we had achieved.
The zendala drawn by the participant ended up with the same basic outline as my original. However, using the same paper chain doll template and tangles I was surprised at how different my Zendala turned out. Thinking back, I must have placed the template in a different position to where I had placed it originally. The tangles were placed in exactly the same spaces on the Zendala, yet it is surprising how different they both look.
Here is a photo of the two workshop Zendalas before they were finished.

Muster Mixer #21 - Ennies & D-Vine
Ennies and D-vine are the two tangles used in this months tangle mixer challenge by CZT, Anya Lathrop. Playing and mixing these two tangles was very relaxing as they easily flowed together.
After I had finished tangling this tile it really looked flat. The shading is definitely the icing on the cake with this tile and totally added more life and interest.

Weekly Challenge #277: Running 'round in Circles
It has been quite a while since I took part in CZT, Laura Harm's weekly challenge. There has been quite a lot happening here on the home front and I haven't even had the time to scratch my nose. So I was happy when I found some time to participate in this weeks Diva Challenge.
Laura's theme for the challenge this week was Running 'round in circles. I have felt like I was running 'round in circles for a while now. So with this weeks theme I just had to tangle.
With circles in mind I decided to place parts of three zendalas on my square tile to create a string. Originally I thought to use a zendala instead of the square tile but decided it might be too much roundness. Then I had the bright idea I had been wanting to try by filling in using a white gelly roll, and black & brown micron pens to make it look like I had placed the three different coloured Zentangle tiles over the top. This is something I have wanted to try since seeing Julie Broderick's (CZT) beautiful tiles on the Zentangle Mosaic where she had done just that. I was not very happy with the look but kept on anyway, in the Zentangle fashion. After creating the coloured background I drew a few circles on the top as strings for some tangles. My first thought for tangles was to use tangles that used orbs. "Noooo!", My inner voice said, "This would definitely be over the top and look awful." So I settled on a combination of organic and geometric tangles. Although I haven't shaded this tile I decided to stop there so I could post it and add the tile to Laura's blog as my participation in the challenge.
If you so desire, head on over to The Diva's blog and check out what others are creating using the tangle crux.

Muster Mixer #20 - Trimonds & Telis
Trimonds by CZT Jane Monk & Telis by Chrissie Frampton are the two tangles Anya challenged us to mix together to create our art this month.
When this challenge was published I did not think I would have time to draw as a lot has been happening here at home and with school holidays on I was booked up with lots of children's Zentangle classes. Whilst in transit to a class one day I became caught in a major traffic jam and all traffic came to a stand still. So after contacting the library where the class was to be held to alert them to my situation I began to tangle to pass the time. During the 2 hours it took for traffic to begin moving again I was able to complete a tile for this challenge.
Unfortunately I found out later that the traffic jam was caused the very strong winds which caused a tree to fall on a ute & the driver had died at the scene. I feel deep sympathy for the driver's family and having to deal with this kind of unexpected death.

At the beginning of each month I always wait in anticipation for CZT, Anya Lathrop to post her challenge to merge two tangles together.

Weekly Challenge #266: "UMT - Crux by Henrike Bratz"
A fun challenge this week by Laura. Being the first Monday of the month we were asked to use the tangle crux by Henrike Bratz.
My immediate thought, once I saw what the tangle looked like, was to use a black tile. On the original step out crux is drawn with the grid under the leaf shapes. My tile turned out with the leaf shapes weaving over and under the grid.
If you so desire, head on over to The Diva's blog and check out what others are creating using the tangle crux.

Muster Mixer #18 - auraknot & paradox
Hi everyone.
I really enjoyed this months Muster Mixer challenge by CZT, Anya Lathrop. Anya asked us to use the tangles auraknot and paradox and mix them together in some way.
To begin, I drew a four pointed star shape and added the first aura as if drawing auraknot. From there I added a diagonal line (like the first line in drawing paradox) beside the aura inside the top point. From there, continuing the sequence for drawing auraknot, I alternated an aura for auraknot and another paradox line, until the pointy bits of the star shape were filled. Paradox was then used to fill the centre of the star and the black lines extending out finished off this tile.
Not sure if you can understand this wordy description of how this tile was achieved, but I love the outcome.

Weekly Challenge #265: "Stripes"
Stripes are the theme for this weeks challenge by CZT Laura Harms. Which tangles to choose to create the stripes was a bit of a dilemma as so many can be used to create the striped look. I also wanted to do something that would be a little different to what I believed other Zentangle enthusiasts would possibly do for this challenge. So waited for some inspiration to come to mind.
Waking up at 2am last night the light in my head went on and so I turned on my light and began tangling.
I began with drawing my stripe string and then added a number of various sized 'S' lines, through the string lines to add a little interest. This was the inspiration that woke me at 2am in the morning.

Once the foundations were drawn I was able to turn off the light in my head & the light in my bedroom & go back to sleep.
During a coffee break today I started tangling my tile. Cresent moon stuck in my head & so four of the separate areas on the tile have cresent moon tangleations. This is one of the great things I love about Zentangle - just go with the flow. Tidings, using the 'S' line completed my tile.

Weekly Challenge #264: "String Theory: String into Spring"
Spring has Sprung in the Northern hemisphere where CZT, Laura Harms lives in Canada. So with spring in the air there she challenged us to use a spring as our string for this weeks challenge.
I used a spring in the round and then decided to use the tangle 'spring'kle to go with the theme.
Here is my spring themed Zentangle.

Zentangle @ Kogarah
Held my first children's class at Kogarah library during the school holidays.
The children were aged 7 - 12 years.
During the class they drew a Zentangle tile as they learnt the basic method.
Here is their mosaic.
The children then started a ZIA (Zentangle Inspired Art) by tracing their hands, adding extra lines for the string and then tangling the spaces created.
We all had such fun and the children were so creative.

Weekly Challenge #263: "Globular Grid"
An interesting grid based challenge was on the cards this week for Laura's Diva Challenge. Laura asked us to create a grid on a circle and make it globular and see where it took us.
I loved Laura's example on the tan tile, which I had not used in ages, so I decided to us a tan tile as well.
As I completed my tile I worked from the inside out. I'm pleased with the results except for the printemps in the middle, which really looks lost when compared to the rest. If I get time I may play around with this and add the updated version if I get time.
Anyway, head on over to The Diva's blog and check out what others are creating using the tangle fassett by Lynn Mead.

Muster Mixer #17 - floop & aurabridge
Another very challenging tangle mixer from Anya Lathrop, CZT.
This month Anya challenged us to use her new tangle floop and a tangleation of hollibaugh called aurabridge by CZT, Rita Nikolajeva.
Floop is a new tangle for me and as Anya states on her blog it does require some practice before you become more proficient.
Here is my submission for this months Muster Mixer.

This particular challenge was definitely drawn 'one line at a time' and needed my full concentration. When I started this tile I had an idea for how I was going to mix the two tangles together but no idea of what the tile would look like when finished; in true Zentangle fashion. I am absolutely thrilled with the outcome. Who would have thought I could every draw something like this. It definitely would not have been possible without the principles of Zentangle to follow.
Here it is again with colour added. As I kept looking at the original I felt it needed the so called pathways to show more clearly. However I still like the original better.

If you are looking to add to your Zentangle creativity then having a go at Anya's mixer challenges once a month are a great idea. And best of all, if you want you can share your ideas with other people who love the challenge by using the linky machine, or not, or just enjoy watching your Zentangle tiles take on a whole new creative life.

New Tangle Pattern - Agora
"The Concourse" is a multifunction venue in the heart of Chatswood, NSW. It houses a concert hall, theatre, art space, library, two open green spaces, restaurants, cafés and retail stores, which makes The Concourse a perfect meeting place for many different occasions.
The woodwork inside the windows is what drew my attention. Needing inspiration for a tangle name I searched the internet for words that mean meeting place and 'Agora' was born.
According to Wikipedia, "The Agora (/ˈæɡərə/; Ancient Greek: Ἀγορά Agorá) was a central space or square in ancient Greek city-states. The literal meaning of the word is "gathering place" or "assembly"". Agora is my latest tangle for you to try. I have included some tangleations of this very versatile tangle pattern & look forward to seeing what you create with it in the future.
Happy tangling and Enjoy!

Square One - Yuma
Well, I don't usually post the tiles I complete for the Facebook group - Square One tangle of the week.
This week I have a few minutes spare before I begin work, so decided people who wonder about the group can see an example and it may spur them on to joining the group.
This weeks tangle was Yuma by CZT Tina Hunziker. I completed a white tile and a black tile.
Thank you for visiting my page. Feel free to leave a comment. I read them all!

Muster Mixer # 16 - Cubine & Miander
Heaps of fun this month with Anya Lothrop's Muster mixer. This month Anya asked us to mix/merge the tangles cubine and miander.
This month, instead of using a white tile I decided to use a tan tile. I am very happy with the final result. I hope you like it also.
I so enjoy these challenges Anya puts together for us. Although they take me away from the pure Zentangle process they are good for my creativity and problem solving capabilities. Through these mixers I have noticed the ideas I explore, whilst doing the muster mixer, start to appear in my Zentangle tiles and have added to create more interesting and different tiles.
