Today I would like to show you a simple dot grid tangle that uses the . (dot) and (elemental strokes used when we create Zentangle art.
I saw this pattern in a catalogue ages ago and had taken a photo of it. I had forgotten all about it till I went looking through my photos to find something else and rediscovered it.
As I was drawing this tangle it kept making me very happy because of its repetitive nature and simplicity. So when thinking about a name for this tangle I decided to use a word meaning happy. Jocund means cheerful so thought this an appropriate name.
The step out below is drawn without turning the tile. However an alternative, which may be easier for some, is to turn the tile180 degrees for drawing the second set of arcs (step 3 in the step out).

I have included some different ways to shade jocund in these examples and a tangleation can be seen in the top left hand side of the white tile.
Here is a copy of the step-outs enlarged to make it easier to see.
More Variations of jocund.
I hope it gives you as much pleasure as it does for me. I would love to see what you can do with this fun tangle. Give it a go.
Update:
As I kept playing with jocund I realised I was drawing it differently to the step-out above. I find it easier to draw with less thinking involved. Here is the step-out
Happy tangling.

Thank you for sharing your new tangle Jocund. I tried to follow your steps, however, the image is too small to really see much. e.g.: dots, how to connect - I have no idea.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your feedback Susie. I will add an enlarged step out instruction image for everyone so it makes it easier to follow. Come back again soon.
DeleteOh, thank you so much, Lianne. This is way better. I will certainly give your tangle a try.
DeleteYou're welcome Susie.
DeleteJust to let you know, Lianne, that I did what I promised. I used your Jocund in the latest DIVA challenge. I still had some trouble with the dots, but when I did little squares it was OK. And then it became actually quite easy. I think it looks a bit like a metal plate, doesn't it.
